Tree of Life
The story
One of the earliest and often used terms by early settlers. This pieced tree derives its name from the biblical reference – Genesis 2:9 “And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the
garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” This pattern was picked for this property because of the many evergreens that line this property and the farm name “Bell Trees Farm”. The colour choice is the owner’s preference. This pattern uses the intimate play of light and shadow in the leaves and trunk of the tree. Each tree is set on point in rows so that each tree stands individually. This symbol was also used on coins and flags during the revolution and is still a favourite on quilts today. The appeal of this ancient design is liked not only for its intrinsic
beauty, but for its quality of faith and belief in eternal life. Written by Laura Hathaway
